And when I do invade enemy territory, I set the army to Raid stance once I get there, just to raise income for the turns before the enemy forces respond.įinally, when I start out as Rome, I always make it a rule from recently to build up no less than two legions with the combat units, and leave the garrison units with a single legion located away from the Etruscan war front to guard Magna Graeca. In fact, I won't even send an army into enemy territory until I am sure to have enough units to make it possible to extract myself should the going get rough and I can presume that I can withdraw back to my own regions with fewer losses than if I showed up with a measly 6-unit quarter-stack with an enemy coming out of the nearest settlement or defile to stomp me with a half-stack or greater force.

One hole and the towers being knocked out of commission is enough for my assault force.Īnother self-imposed rule I use pertains to the campaign itself. The plan is now to use them only when taking walled settlements, and that only if they appear to be strongly defended stone walls with a 2nd or 3rd tier city. I never gave much thought about the artillery upkeep, but I have considered dismantling the ballistas in my armies at this juncture, having seen the deficit show up in my Treasury.

Just seeing if other people have found interesting ways of making their game experience more enjoyable (outside of mods I suppose). I don't intend for this to be a *FIX THIS UNIT* thread. More generally, what rules do you impose on yourself to enhance your game experience? (not really focused on RP here though, more to make the combat better) I am wondering if anyone else is doing the same thing: purposefully not using siege weapons to enhance their game experience (if you haven't tried it - try it). In contrast, having to use ladders/rams/towers adds a fun dimension to the battle. When using ballistas (if I'm playing smart, I'll bring no less than 4 to a siege), I can take down all the towers on the side facing me, blast a few holes in the walls, and probably take out a VERY sizable chunk of their army (due to death from wall breaking). I actually find myself siegeing for a few turns so that I can get towers/rams. All of a sudden, walled city battles are a lot more interesting and difficult. I find that ballistas are so over-the-top good (ESPECIALLY for their upkeep) that I have begun to play campaigns where I disallow myself from using them (or any other siege weapon).
